England along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
